From “Reefer Madness” in 1936 to “Hemp for Victory” in 1942, hemp – a member of the Cannabis sativa family – has always been a hotly contested product. The plants which astrophysicist Carl Sagan suggested may have been the world’s first agriculture crop have been both vilified and lauded, and continue to be an economic and cultural flashpoint. But since the U.S. Farm Act of 2014, a growing demand for hemp seed products has propelled the development of high-tech processing facilities – some incorporating cleanroom technologies – which envisage a wholly different future for the high-protein food.
